I just bought a couple of Swiss Schmidt Rubins. What is a good round to shoot in them and what would be a good round to hunt Moose?

most people shoot either mil-surp ball or reload...most bullets weights people will use range from 168gr up to 175's I havent heard of anyone using them for hunting (99.99999999% of the people I know use it for target matches and use a 168gr SMK) but a good 165gr BT like a Nosler BT would work...but might be to light for moose...I have 2 myself and use 41.5gr Varget and a 168gr SMK for very accurate target work @200yds

I bought a K-31 awhile back, also picked up 480 rounds of mil-surplus ammo the same time. The ammo cost me $25 more than the gun.

Something I have always wondered about...I thought my Mosin M44 had a harsh recoil. My K-31 has more recoil than my M44, the K-31 is heavier, longer and uses a smaller round.

What makes the K-31 recoil harder, the type of powder or pressure of the round? Just wondering.

I've shot milsurp and prvi-partizan for target work, and picked up some Wolf Gold in 174gr SP for hunting, but I haven't tried it yet (too many guns to shoot them all) :) It might fill your needs.

As far as recoil, I found them pretty mild in recoil myself, especially compared to an M44. Guess we're all different! :)

Excellent target rifles for the price 3 years ago - heck, even at todays prices!

These K31’s while not super historical from a military standpoint were probably one of the best deals on the mil-surp market, and as the above post says even now at these prices it is a damn good deal for the quality.

When you put a K31 along side any other military bolt action the extra girth is very noticeable. A decade from now we all rue the fact we did not buy several more.

Personally the Wolf works good but also the commercial ammo Cole Distributing sells imported from Portugal has worked for me flawlessly, it is boxer primed and has reloadable brass.

NRA K-31 Article.

The new issue of the American Rifleman has an article providing information of the K-31. It is the basics of how to take it apart and put back together without having extra parts for another build. Don't ya just hate it when that happens. :)
