Have a 1919a4 built to standard 30’06 specifications.
Can easily install all Israeli 308 modifications except for the oversized belt holding pawl.

How much of an issue is this to reliable running in 308?

Does the original 30’06 belt holding pawl preform better in 308 with links or cloth belts?

Anyone with firsthand experience appreciated.

There is no need to change the USGI 30.06 belt holding pawl. Your weapon will work just fine running .308 ammo using either links or cloth belts.

If you were using it in combat with people shooting back at you It might be an issue. But for sitting on a chair shooting up old refrigerators, it will not really matter. the bigger issue for function will be cutting back the RH rear cartridge stop. Pretty much a must do to gain clearance fo the belts/ links since they are positioned further back with 308. You may want to also try it first with the 30 cal booster. One of my 308 guns runs just fine with the 30-06 booster, just real slow - like 400-500 RPM. Saves on ammo, and is actually more fun to shoot that way. At least at refrigerators. I am more of a 700-800 RPM guy when folks are shooting back.

Some guns will work fine and some won't but it would not be a bad idea to just buy a complete 308 top cover because it is an easy swap. As mentioned the right rear cartridge stop will be the one that gives you issues.
