I am assembling my gun with a 100% KMP plate, and just got the rivets from MSG today. All the holes are pre drilled and countersunk. How critical is checking the barrell shroud? All the holes are already there, and as near as I can tell from my straight edge, it's pretty good. I didn't break out feeler gauges or anything, but how good is "pretty good"? I can't really see how I could adjust anything since the holes are all drilled.

If its a 100% plate with all holes drilled,,, rivet it,,, ain't nothing you are gonna do about it. Hopefully whoever made it did their homework whilst building it. Jacket adjustments can be checked and made when you get to that point. Worst case, you might have to tighten or loosen a tad, and relocate the jacket screw hole,,, but you'll find that out later.

thanks for the responses

I've got it riveted together, and test assembled. Most of the rivet heads look OK. They should clean up nicely when they are abrasive blasted for parking. It sure does like CLP! The one piece I can't find right now is the headspace spring. I linked up some fired cases and cycled them through. They ran fine, cycling by hand. I have to order another spring while I work on a bench-pod.

I can't wait to get it to a range!

I haven't personally seen one of Tom's plates, but if the holes are drilled with a 3/16" bit there will still be just a tad of clearances so the shroud can be a little out of line so the straight edge was a good idea. Just follow the tutorial on aligning it and you'll be good to go. Just remember, for every 1/16" it's out of alignment that will equate to 9.375" off at 100 yards so do the best you can...the rear sight adjustment will take care of the rest.

ordering spare parts

As usually happens, I got my spare parts and headspacing springs in yesterday and I found the one that came in my parts set (on the floor beside my work bench) ..... Now I have two spares.....

Oh, I figured that would happen, I KNEW I had the spring. I SAW it. When I took everything else out of the box, it wasn't there. I KNOW I looked around my bench before I ordered the spare stuff. Only thing I can figure is it got stuck inside my Garand book. I knocked that book off the end of the bench and when I picked it up, there was the spring. OH well. At least now I have some spare parts...... and a new Thermold mag for my CETME.

I just hope the spare parts don't work like Garand spare parts.....they accumulate until there are almost enough for another weapon.

That's why I only buy Garand barrelled actions. Use up the parts in the garage. Years ago, I burned up the surplus stocks as firewood (a friendly gunsmith gave me all the throw away wood). Should have kept the stocks, but would have had to build a small barn to store the stuff.
