recently, been informed that the "WOLf" brand 7.62x39 ammo uses .308 bullets? and REAL 7.62x39 is .311. I have various rounds from different manufacturers and will check with a mic as soon as my shop isn't flooding from all the bad weather!!! i've been building alot of AK's lately and the AK boards have posts about how the wolf ammo Rattles down an AK barrel?keyhole patterns in targets? i've got a fair amount of "wolf" in my ammo dump, and it shoots fine as far as i'm concerned, the AK isn't that accurate any way. It's a great assault rifle though.Building 10 more romies in group build soon.

I am not at the house where most of my stash is located, so I couldn't check some older Russian stuff, but the Wolf that I just measured was in fact .308. As far as "Real Russian 7.62x39" is concerned, I seem to remember something about the difference in measurements. I think it has been said that the U.S. made x39 measures at .308 versus the Russian at .311. However, Wolf is manufactured at Tula Cartridge Works and I just measured it at .308. So, this post is probably pointless, and you are now no better informed than before. I will measure some other stuff when I get a chance though.

point is when you shot it does your AK spit it out and possible take out an attacker if so it works and your good to go. I dont think anyone is going to be shooting 300yards with this type of ammo anyways.. I will try when i hopefully get my xcr but again no hopes past 100yds..

Reloaders View

To add to the question of .308 versus .311 the dies for 762x39 from several companies are available with the expander ball in .308 and .311. When reloading my choice has been .308 if using soft points for hunting. Accuracy has been OK, but this also may be directly related to bore condition.

real 7.62x39

the tide subsided and i was able to locate my dial calipers, and some of the older stuff( anybody remember the 1280 round cases for $90, back in the 1990's) does mic at .310/.311.all the black box wolf stuff does mic at .308, now i've been informed that the wolf " classic" in the camo colored box is .311, but have not confirmed it. i've built a couple of 7.62x39 AR's and they are REAL fussy about what ammo the will accept,(magazines too)!!! i have an AMD65 and some romies and the don't care what i feed them, just as long as i don't run out!!!! 100 yards at best!!! for anything longer will use my 1919A4.i don't have to reload it as often.

I do remember checking with Sturm Ruger about the chinese 30 Russian ammo, way back when I opted for a Mini-30 over the AK [years ago]. I was concerned about the same .311 vs .308 thing. The bullets definately were a tad larger, and steel coated too IIRC. I know they used to spark alot when hitting gravel or stones, as well as corrosive as all get out.

BTW, Ruger did tell me too shoot all I wanted - it wouldn't hurt the gun. Right! :D
