My method of removing the RSP rivets

I carefully ground the rivet heads down until they were almost flush, close to paper thin. The heads are almost symetrical with the shank of the rivet, so I center punch as close to center as possible. I drill out the rivet with a 1/8" dia. drill. I then punch out what is left with a good punch. The heads are thin enough that they shear off and the rivet shank punches out. It doesn't take more than 10 to 15 minutes and I don't have an grinding scares on the bottom plate. HTH

This has been the best selling point on the kits from OOW. They are the only ones without those grinding marks on the bottom plate. Sure, it's more work, but well worth it.

The one thing I would add to Cav Trooper's post, is you may use your 60 degree countersink to clear more of the rivet head before punching out. You may not need to do that, but it can help sometimes. The bottom plate holes do have a slight countersink under those rivet domes, but you don't want to enlarge it. Don't go too deep with the drill either. You want to have some rivet head left on the inside to drive the punch against.

Three layers

of fitted masking tape make a good "stop grinding" gauge. Keeps the grinder off the Park. Overbore

I have kits from both OOW & Coles Distributing; this thread explains why the grind marks are only on the Coles guns.:( The left side plate on the OOW kit was missing the riveted in ramp of some type next to the ammo feed port. I need to get one of these to do this kit. The LSP looked as if it has never been assembled and is of SG manufacture.:D

Sounds like you are missing the Extractor Cam. Call OOW and let the know. I expect they'll take care of you. If you get the cam and need the 5/32 rivets, those will be available shortly. :D

Just removed the RSP rivets today from my kit.

In my vice with soft jaw pad, I clamped up the bottom plate & LSP.

Then using an aggressive file I took the rivets down as low as I can go without hitting the bottom plate. BTW the rivet cut easy. It did not take long with the file.

I center punched the rivets

Then using an 1/8" drill bit, I center drilled each rivet.
Then I used 3 other bits to cut some more of the rivet away....sorry I didn't look at the sizing.....just becareful not to go to deep or too wide and hit the bottom plate counter sink.

Then using an punch, 1/8 I believe, I smacked those rivets out with a BFH.

Total time 25 minutes max......The rivets are soft

Thanks, After the holidays are over, I'll contact OOW and get a replacement extractor cam. At least I know what the little bugger is called now.:)

Removing Rivits.....

The way that I did mine was to carefully centerpunch the head of each rivit, drill the down about 3/16" with a next size down drill and then use a small pin punch and what do you know, it leaves no grind marks.:D It all works, it's just your preference.

Regards,
Tom
