Don't get crazy guys.. Just a question guys. 72 vintage steel cases Romanian 8mm Corrosive or not. What is the best method of cleaning up the gun after a session. I'd look it up in a search but theres nothin yet to look up

Thanks While were at it isn't SA 308 non corrosive with only normal cleaning required? I know newbie questions, but I've got a fortune tied up in these guns.

for corrosive ammo I use windex with ammonium :D and use it after the shoot to help neutralize the salt. then its clean like normal. As for the romy being corrosive I am not sure, but someone will chime in...

Hoppe's #9

If you read the label and what is on the HOPPE'S web site you will note that they state that #9 "Frees gun bores of corrosive Primer fouling and residue".
It is what I have always used, never had any problems, I tend to believe the statement. I think Hoppe's #9 has been around longer than I have!

For the ultimate in cleaning corrosive (hot water) works excellent for dissolving the salts.Just get a big pan and put it on the stove till it gets real hot, then take your barrel out and slowly pour the hot water down the barrel.Let the water drain through. You can repeat this a few times. When your finished you can clean it normally with Hoppes etc.

Or
You can plug one end of your barrell with say a small peice of wadding (napkin) then take your windex and fill the barrel till its full.Let set for a minute or two then drain.Repeat one more time then clean it normal with your Hoppes. Then you should be all set.

*Note*
If your not going to be shooting for awhile you can run a patch of light gun oil through the barrel then plug each end with some wadding. When your ready to shoot simply clean it out with your solvents and you will be good to go.
Hope this helps...:)

yeah mildly my ass!....as far as i know all of the surplus 8mm is corrosive.rory
Well said, strange one. Treat ALL surplus ammo as corrosive. As far as dealers telling you it's MILDLY corrosive... ain't no such thang. It's either corrosive or it's not ... with the one exception of Egyptian 8mm which falls into the single class of horribly corrosive.

Only other problem with surplus ammo was the Chinese copper washed stuff that very specifically came in the 1200 round cases with 4 300 round spam cans inside. It was steel jacketed which added barrel erosion to the joy of corrosive. It was possible to wipe the rifling out of a new barrel in one full auto weekend shoot. Not only did you make an A4 barrel into a "shotgun" barrel but it was a rusty shotgun barrel as well.

Wonder if someone makes "birdshot" 308 ammo .... hmmmm.:)

Easy question, oh strange one.

Desist from posting pics of said carbon unit with garden gnomes or camoflaged as a Duracell and we'll think about it.

Isn't "mildly corrosive" like being " a little bit pregnant" :D
Eggzactly... you'd be better off in the NON-pissing side of the pool.

I treat all surplus ammo as corrosive as what is the difference I have to clean the gun anyway. I use the old GI bore(I bought alot years ago as I knew from the looks of it it would be banned some day) cleaner(some is white milky and some smells and looks like diesel fuel) but it works well.
