she was an old foster dog. 11 year old german short haired pointer. we picked her up as a stray 3 months ago. since then fattened her up and gave her a comfy couch to sleep on. she had cancer, was going blind and maybe a little deaf.

today seemed too much for her. it was time.

i know it was the right thing to do but i am way depressed about it.

spay and neuter your pets. beat up backyard breeders.
get your new pets from shelters and rescues.

it is pretty bad when i have to give the others up. but at least i know that they are going to good homes. 3 are here for good and there is a constant revolving door of foster dogs. we take em in so that they don't have to stay in a crate until a new home is found, and it makes it easier for the transition in to the new home. also basic house training is generally picked up quickly when you have 3 well trained dogs as examples.

but this one we knew was never going to have a new home. it was ho****e care from the beginning. just tried to show that dog that there was a better side to life than starving in the snow out in the ghetto (where she was found)

i just hope i made the right decision. it was a very sad day.

The fact that you gave her a warm safe home, and a family that showed her love, is ALWAYS a positive thing. You couldn't change the fact that she was sick; and you did more than anyone else ever did for her, from the sound of it. All that still doesn't make it any easier, granted. But in the overall scheme of things, it made a difference. Hopefully there's some comfort in that.

she had 3 happy months with you

I had a german shepherd with cancer, when we found out about the cancer we spoiled her one night the she was eating pork chops and we had pizza and I can go on, she was also a rescue.

Now we have 4 birds and a mut the 2 inside birds and the dog are on diets and the 2 ducks have a heated pool and a heated hut all rescued and now spoiled.

I am sure sorry about that. One thing about living here, with the preditors it is absolutely impossible to keep a dog or a cat as a pet:( However, I have been in your shoes with horses and that is the absolute worst feeling in the world! I get WAY to attached to things, so I feel for you. Hotch

Rescue Dane #3

Rory,
I'm on my third Great Dane now. All have been rescues and all were the one I came home to. It's a sad fact but we almost always live longer than our pets.:( Being a foster home must be some of the hardest and rewarding thing to do, I know I couldn't do it. My first Dane only made it to 6 (cancer) the second to 11+ (it was just time to let go) and #3 is just a goof and always brightens my day. :D Doggies know what you do for them.
To sum it all up...........ya did the right thing at the right time and I bet deep down you know it! But ya will always wonder about it, I still do on mine.

Rory, sorry to hear about the loss. It's hard to lose a pet, especially a dog. I've found that rescue dogs/ strays can be some of the most loving animals you will ever find. They just need someone to care about them. We've got three here now.

sorry to hear it rory :( it fricken sux i know it. not much can be done about it, but at least know that for the time you had together was alot better than many other shelter dogs will ever have. one orphan got the lucky ticket and had a warm home, no matter how long it lasted.

My pit is a rescue, i just had a tumor removed from her a couple months ago, she has skin cancer, she is 9yrs old now. Unfortunately i will be feeling what you do right one day.

Rory, sorry to hear about that, bud. I too have been there, more than once, though it was long ago. Heck, I had my last dog cremated and still have a container with ashes. Always meant to bury him, but never did. I encased the container in concrete, embedded his name tag with a sheet of clear plastic over it. My poor dog never knew he was going to stick around so long, lol. I often wonder if the fact that I never buried him was some psychological issue about not having to deal with him really being gone. He's still sort of here. ;)

Have you heard about Mark Levin's book, "Rescuing Sprite"? Sounds like a book you might want to read. :) http://www.marklevinshow.com/ I know you won't be in synch with his politics, but his book is being acclaimed all around.

Man I'm really sorry to hear that.

I know how you feel, I had to let my best friend go a couple of years ago, our only pup that's left is a big ol boy who's already outlived his siblings.
He doesn't have much time left but we're gonna make him as comfortable as he can possibly be until we don't have any choice.

You shouldn't feel bad, you gave her a warm place to lay with plenty of food and love for her last days, what more could she ask for.

Sorry man

Tough day/decision Rory. But at least it shows them (pets) that humans can be selfless, and full of love and compassion. Any act of kindness toward any animal is our only gift we can give, including most of all, mercy. I still sob over my Shepherd, 'panzer." Your kindness to strays shows the type of guy you are. Stay safe. Out.

Wow ,i am sorry Rory:
I hope you are OK.
Remember when you asked me to send you Pics of my sled dogs ?
I didn't because i sold them to an old Eskimo 4 days later .
This was before i transfered ,and i wish i hadn't.
two days after you asked me that i went on a six dog run ,fast ,light and your best dogs .
They call it a Rush ,,,,we were 45 miles from base on a ridge ,the radio said a storm was moving in and you better believe it.
Both my leads slipped and fell off the edge ,the other dogs kept them from falling to the bottom.
Rosie broke her legs , Cisco broke his back.
Cisco was paralyzed ,i put him on the sled but he couldn't breath right ,Rosie was crying.
Four dogs now and only a little water that wasnt a block of ice your tounge would stick to ,because we were only going to be gone 8 hours.
I had no leads and the younger dogs were freaking.
Cisco died about 30 min later ,I just had to bury him:(
He was my puppy ,i found some soil beside some trees and i put him there,i never went back:(
Rosie was bad ,a bone was sticking out of her leg i hadn't seen before ,and she was cold.

The temp went down over 30 deg .by the time i got to camp ,and it was a blizzard.
Rosie was dead , it was my fault ,the old men from the town said i saved the other dogs and myself ,But Rosie was dead.
One of the older guys asked me if i had taken a gun ,i said i had ,and he asked me why i didn't put the dogs down because they suffered.
You know Rory ,have you ever had your finger on a trigger ,and you just cant pull it ?
I just couldn't do it ,i tried.
I will send you the photos.,bad Ju Ju i gotta go now.
I guess i wasnt the big sled dog champion i thought i was .
