OK. I'm getting ready to build a semi auto Sten, and have a question about building a short barreled rifle. Could someone direct me to information regarding how to do it legally? Can I, not being a manufacturer, legally apply for the sbr stamp and build using the original barrel? If so, where can I find the information on how to do so.

Thanks,
Rob

Form 1 does it if you start with a transferrable receiver (I SBRed a Catco sten, a Krink and an AR-15). I think this still works when you build your own receiver as long as you follow the rules about engraving, the way I read the rules. I'm planning on doing that with my semi M56 build so I don't have to put a stupid-looking 16" barrel on it. Can somebody tell me if I'm wrong? I'd like to know too.

Thanks!

Rory,

Thanks a lot. That web site really helps! Conch1, it looks like you're correct with the form 1. At least that's what I gathered from Rory's link. I feel the same way you do. A sten with a 16" barrel just doesn't look right. Any more feedback from anyone that has done this is helpful!

I don't why everybody cites titleii.com as being informative, all it has is the forms, it doesn't tell you anything about the process of doing the NFA paper work or what all other paperwork you need.

fill out the online request for the paperwork you need. http://www.atf.gov/dcof/ I asked for 20 ea of each form, they are very fast in getting it out to you, about a week.

you need to send 2 ea of the following forms to the ATF NFA branch, address is on the Form 1,

F 1 (5320.1) - Application to Make and Register a Firearm

F 5330.20 - Certificate of Compliance With 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B)

FBI FD-258LE - NFA, Imports ORI WVATF0100

fill out the forms, they are self explinatory and isn't that complicated, get 2 passport photos and attach them to the back of the form 1s. if you go to WALGREEN they will take your passport photo, cost is something like 7 bucks for 2. Or, do what I did, and go to a mall and have your photo taken at one of the photo kios booth, those are the right size, 2x2 inches, and much cheaper, plus you will get like 6 or 8 of them, save them for future NFA applications

.
then Call your local PD and ask when they do fingerprinting request, and they will do the fingerprinting for you. Mine was free, but I have read that some PD will charge you

get your chief of police, or sheriff to sign both form 1s.

then mail it all to ATF NFA branch in WV along with 200 bucks and that is it. once you get the approved form 1 back, in 30 days or so, you can build or have a SBR built for you.

if you are going to do the trust route, then you don't need the fingerprinting, passport photo or the CLEO signature.......just 2 copies of the form 1 and form 5330.20

Actually, I found a link on their site that was helpful

http://www.titleii.com/BardwellOLD/law.html

It answered most of my questions.
