my grandfather gave me a SMLE made by BSA in 1918 i think it is a #3 mk3
either way, what is the hole in the butstock from? i think it may be a de-comishining token of some sort. does anybody know what the original thing looked like. i took a quater made of silver and ground it flat then polished it so i could have it engraved with the model of the gun it looks nice but i think i will see what was originaly there before i put it in. any pics would be great or even a discription

It was for a regimental marker stamped on a brass disc with a screw to secure it. There are a few Enfield sites out there. Try to google Lee-Enfield and see what you come up with. Chris

If it was made in 1918 it's a No1 Mk III ...... The unit disc looks like this one.
This one was in Turkish service....

As I understand it the disks were removed during or before WWII. I guess they didn't want to give the enemy too much information about the units they were up against. Most Enfields will be missing the disk. I once made a disk to fill in the hole in an Enfield stock. I used an Army enlisted collar insignia backing but had to grind it done a bit. I think by the time the No 4 rifle was issued they had done away with the disk, at least I have never seen a No. 4 with the hole in the stock.
