so i sent an offer a few minutes ago to a seller here who is asking for way too much for his wares. i sent an example as to why i thought it was too high and offered a bit more than the lower price that i found. and gave the price to include shipping.

the reply was "For that price I would have to cut them in half before I shipped them to you"

i was a bit confused to the nature whether he was talking about higher shipping costs in a larger box so i offered to have him drop the price by 15$ and i could set up a fedex shipping label so i would cover all shipping costs.

he then comes back with the same exorbitant price. seriously the price asking is 4x what the last one sold for on gun broker and twice what ones on gunbroker are not selling for.

he is asking 200$ each and the last one sold for $50. for reference. i offered 150 including shipping for 2 of them then amended that to 135 with my shipping tag. i thought that it was more than fair.

*edited to add the auction that i found* http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=101674971

why do people think that others have no idea the value of products and why would they get bent out of shape when a realistic offer is made. just mad that they might have paid too much for the product in the first place?

I've found that when you come upon people like this it's just best to pass on their stuff. All you'll do is beat yourself up trying to figure out what their problem is. It's simple to see that they obviously want to keep what they have and if they're going to sell it, they want top dollar.;)

Save yourself the headache and pick it up at another place or from another member that wants to deal. If you're going to spend $200 on a shotgun, go to Big5 and at least get a Mossy 500 and not some Norinco POS. The $50 for the one on GB would be the most that I would ever pay for one.

i figured for 75$ each they could be fun for a project i have been thinking of. and would not worry about hurting them.

and i can see turning someone down on an offer, but really say no thanks i am going to try for top dollar here.

they are crappy cheap shotguns, and that is what i was looking for. whatever, i'll pass regardless now.

They also may be unaware of the price at which the item usually sells... (I'm sometimes guilty of that). I had Vicker's parts for sale at a "collectors-high-price" because I didn't know their true value and partially due to mis-identification. After talking with a few members, I posted them at reasonable prices and they sold.

Also, you could have a seller who is testing the market because they can't find items to compare prices with online.

However, a seller becoming "snippy" at an offer seems unwise. Best thing to do is be nice and say they are looking for a higher offer. Or better yet, ask if they can PM you if it doesn't sell at the price they are asking.

If I become "snippy" with a buyer it is usually because they are being dishonest or unprofessional... and by that time, their money/offer is no good to me...

Rory, I don't know if you followed that thread at Gunbroker to it's bloody conclusion. As near as I can tell the seller bailed on the $49.00 price and relisted for a starting bid of $299.00 with a "buy now" of $300.00. It appears that the same gun has been relisted seven times at the $299.00 price without a taker. Maybe the seller has a truckload of these shotguns and threw the first listing out as a loss leader. If so, it looks like he lost his shorts. $49.00 is the kind of price you would expect on a rusty, damascus steel, single barrel, break action Belgian made wall hanger.

I'm told those shotguns might be made by Norinco, just stamped another name to get by arms embargo. They sell for $150-$200, work fine, maybe a little rough around the edges (like the Norinco "cowboy" shotguns and the 1911 clones) but a good/cheap gun for the home or truck. I'll stick with the Mossberg 500, easy to get parts for later on. ;)

Hmmm,

Just an outside view here...

I don't know what those things REALLY sell for, I don't buy that kind of stuff, but you through a low ball bid at him for less than 1/2 of what he was asking and it sounds like you did it in a PM or email.. Seems he didn't like your offer and you've labeled him as a snippy seller with a bad attitude because he turned you down. Your doing this on an open post..

Sounds like your just whining about him not excepting or likeing your low bid..If your going to play the game like that, you should expect responses like that WITHOUT the Whining...If your getting a LOT of responses like that (snippy seller'S) as in more than one, you might review what your doing rather than there reactions, or replys your getting....The Whining can get to be a bit annoying and if folks get to knowing you like to come here and complain when things don't go your way, they may get to where they don't want to deal with you at all....

This is just friendly advice and feel free to disreguard....Lou

hahah lou i get turned down a lot. that is not the issue. and only a couple times has it been to a level of annoyance. maybe this being only the 2nd or third time. (i can only remember this and another)

xdevil... look through the history before that. the 49$ one was up for grabs no less than 7 times for 99$ with none of them selling.

I have to kinda agree with Lou. You did it the right way in emailing an offer - I do that myself on GB quite a bit. I have also gotten both types of responses, as you have. I just shrug off the nasty ones and say, oh hell, I tried, and leave it at that. You probably just had a tense moment Rory, lol.. :D

.......no need to vent out on a private offer. I'd guess quite a few people have gotten the same reply from that seller and ignore his/her listings after that

Rory,
I've been in your shoes before lots of times, but i also expect sellers to be "snippy" because i'm offering them less than what they want. if they wanted it to sell fast, then they should know what the market price is and they adjust. if you found the same thing at a reasonable price, why not just buy it from someone else who's willing to sell it at the price you want? i'm glad if i even get an answer whether it's nice or some telling me to go f*c* myself from the sellers!! at least you tried and know. My point is, you gotta expect these responses when your asking to buy something lower than what they are advertising.... unless you live in mexico

I have been on both sides of the equation on this one. I had a mp44 mag on several boards and it is expensive. I have had several offers from $250 to $350. I priced it at $400 and that is the price on this one. I always reply to the offers and I am sorry if me replying no thank you upsets the potential buyer, but it is a rare mag that has never been inserted into a rifle. It is what it is and I know what it is worth to me. It makes no difference how many of them I have, or what bubba sold one for. Everyone wonders why the real good stuff never makes it to the public marketplace. When it does most of the time it just gets criticized for being overpriced. The really nice stuff is swapped between collectors and most often out of the spotlight for this reason. I did sell the mag, but it was not on the internet. A fellow collector called me and asked if I had any. It was described over the phone and he bought it sight unseen. That is how the really nice stuff changes hands in the world of gun collecting. No need in advertising or letting non potential buyers touch or drool on it (even virtually);)

In the end, it's the seller's item to price according to what it is worth to HIM. If no one else agrees with him as to its value, then at that point, he can either choose to accept less, or to keep it. But there's no point in being an ass about it, on either buyer OR seller's side. If an offer is made, then a simple "thanks, but I believe its worth more than that to me" is usually sufficent. Or, a counteroffer is not out of line, either. The only thing I would have done in Rory's case would have been to answer his response with "Thanks anyway, and best of luck with your sale" and leave it at that. No need for all the hubbub, bub. :D

Rory, I think my post came out wrong. I was agreeing with you; not ragging on you for posting about it. :)

I made an offer for a QCB for a .50 that was f/s on GB.
The seller listed it that it would fit and head space fine on a regular M2HB.
I pointed out to him that yes it might head space but there is absolutely no provision to hold headspace on a regular M2HB and that using it so is extreamly dangerous. One would need the correct BBl support to prevent the bbl from moving either in or out and correct head space can only be acheived with either the correct # breech lock installed or a customised breech lock to accomodate that barrel.
I thought my offer was very fair + what ever shipping.
He thanked me for the info, modified his listing, and declined my offer.
His min. was above my max. But the guy seemed nice enough about it.
Oh, well. I don't know if he sold it or not.
Without the rest of the setup that bbl is just a tent stake.
Meanwhile I'm still looking for one. Preferably one with the handle still on it.

i don't mind the declines. really a lot of things i offer what the piece is worth to me at that moment in time. if i really have to have something or the price is fine i take it as it sits. i generally only make offers on things that are either overpriced or i just don't need but wouldn't mind having at the right price.
