Anyone own one? First generation. I've been thinking of getting one but I don't like plastic.
Would the M14 or M1a stock(wood) fit on it. Would modification be required? If so how much?

Id love to have one but I need another semi auto 308 like I need a hole in the head. I agree with the plastic. A walnut one would look good but Ive never seen one.

I love that gun but my question is does that kick like a mule or does it still have enough heft to keep it stable. not that it would stop me from getting one it's the $1500 thats stopping me at this time....

Springfield Armory and rumor

I heard that Springfield is having some parts subcontacted in China, is that true? I do have to consider the source, a very well versed dealer in used M1As and Garands who is selling early guns at premium prices.

Saw on another site that a fellow had bought a Chinese M14 and had the barrel cut down to 16".
I think if i could find a good price on a chinese m14 I may give it a try.

Ive heard bad things about the norinco m14s (the ones that are here now) to the point where a company for a price fixes all the problems with them to make them safe to shoot.

If I bought another Norinco, it would be for the sum of the parts, chances are you're going to have to tear it down for a rebuild soon. The receivers are EXC, doubt you'll ever have trouble there.

The problems with Norinco/Polytech M-14S are mainly the bolts, some are too soft and about all have poor locking lug angles, they can wear out quickly, leading to very dangerous headspace. I'm told replacing bolt with (lapped in)TRW version is good option.

Another complaint is op rods not hardened properly, most just replaced it with USGI. Heard a few complaints about the Chinese barrels crapping out within a few thousand rounds, throat erosion and poor accuracy. Also the FCG wearing out, doubling or dumping a whole mag, not good. I'd say replacing those "questionable" Chi-Com items with USGI parts helps get that bayonet lug and flash hider back on. : D

I had a Polytech about 8 years back. Shot 4 inch groups, and the op rod came off the bolt all the time. Recoil was harsh and magazine fit sucked. I traded it for a post ban STG58. The same gun now sells for about 6-800 dollrs, my Century STG for about 400......but I hated that POS Chicom junk.

I heard the same thing from a less than reliable source. I believe that they're trading some cast parts for forged parts, but I could be wrong. I hope they're doing it to cut costs and improve quality, and not sacrificing quality to turn a quick buck, but you never know.

I have handled both the scout and the socom, and can't decide which I like best. Both are pretty cool. Need to actually shoot them if I get a chance.

I see people trying to sell Springfield's around here all the time ,our local gun store has 3 right now ,2 ,SOCOMS.
Before i bought my M14 i called around and read a lot on the M14 forum.
Its like people either love the SA guns or hate them.
Smith and Knight seem to get a lot of them in their shops for repair, and neither one of them seemed to like the SA guns to much.
The best ones right now are Fulton and LRB ,and Fulton sells a lot of stuff for the M14s and a lot of guys buy stocks from them to put on the SOCOM.
LRB makes a rifle a lot like the SOCOM ,and its about the same price.
From what a lot of the guys who build or repair the SA stuff tell me a lot of the rifle is made in China.
I had an issue with LRB when i first got my rifle as far as the butt plate but they jumped right on it and now it is the best rifle i own.
100% USGI ,made in the U.S. by a retired Marine who will not even say the word China.
A good site to find out a lot about the M14s built today is.

This is an LRB tanker , everyone says it is Superior to the SOCOM ,Fulton makes a black polymer hand guard to replace the brown fiberglass one , it is well worth the money.

Dont let his prices fool you ,if you order from him he comes off that price by 1/3 rd.
