Victoria, Texas is a town about 80 miles west of Houston.

Local Hispanic leaders there, in opposition to pending Immigration Legislation, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses in the Victoria area this past weekend as a demonstration of their economic impact on the community.

The boycott was declared a success by the Hispanic community, noting that revenue in Caucasian owned businesses was down by 19%.

Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was reduced by 77%, money orders sent out of the country were down by 97%, and the cost of daily clean-up and trash collection was down by 84%. Shoppers reported that they could actually hear English being spoken throughout the community for the first time in recent memory, and customers actually paid for purchases with real money, not government debit cards!

Some mexicans* moved in a few houses down from me. About once a week when I get home, I typically find generic brand candy wrappers out front, and mexican brand soda and beer bottles on my yard, or in my trash can.

*Some, is relative. There's got to be close to 20 of 'em in that house

Homeward Bound: Recent Immigration Enforcement and the Decline in the Illegal Alien Population
By Steven A. Camarota, Karen Jensenius
July 2008

Monthly data collected by the Census Bureau through May 2008 shows a significant decline in the number of less-educated, young Hispanic immigrants in the country. The evidence indicates that the illegal immigrant population may have declined by over one million in the last year. There are strong indications immigration enforcement is responsible for at least part of the decline. The economy also is likely playing a role.

Among the findings:

Our best estimate is that the illegal immigrant population has declined by 11 percent through May 2008 after hitting a peak in August 2007.
The implied decline in the illegal population is 1.3 million since last summer, from 12.5 million to 11.2 million today.
The estimated decline of the illegal population is at least seven times larger than the number of illegal aliens removed by the government in the last 10 months, so most of the decline is due to illegal immigrants leaving the country on their own.
One indication that stepped-up enforcement is responsible for the decline is that only the illegal immigrant population seems to be affected; the legal immigrant population continues to grow.
Another indication enforcement is causing the decline is that the illegal immigrant population began falling before there was a significant rise in their unemployment rate.
The importance of enforcement is also suggested by the fact that the current decline is already significantly larger than the decline during the last recession, and officially the country has not yet entered a recession.
While the decline began before unemployment rose, the evidence indicates that unemployment has increased among illegal immigrants, so the economic slow-down is likely to be at least partly responsible for the decline in the number of illegal immigrants.
There is good evidence that the illegal population grew last summer while Congress was considering legalizing illegal immigrants. When that legislation failed to pass, the illegal population began to fall almost immediately.
If the decline were sustained, it would reduce the illegal population by one-half in the next five years.

I've seen that report too, Lucky.

Thing is some people are saying the numbers are bogus, and pointing out that due to increased enforcement, and growing public outcry, that the illegals are more inclinded to keep a low profile and aren't being accounted for...

Thus our lower numbers. :(

That and the fact that there are some departments out there who have an unwritten policy that crimes committed by illegals are often "overlooked", due in no small part to the fact that arresting them often only winds up in the immigration guys just turning them loose, or sending them home for a weekend "vacation". And if it is something REALLY bad, they can count on the Feds trying to step in and tell them that the locals do not have jurisdiction on matters of illegals, and then the Feds turn around and push discrimination/hate crime cases against those who DO go after the criminals. Is it any wonder that some of the local LEOs throw up their hands and say "Screw it!"?
