Hello all, I read the tutorial for field stripping the 1919. Right from the start, I messed up. I failed to lock down the screw in the back which locks the spring in the bolt. Needless to say, I now have a little reminder on my finger. It seems the previous owner packed the gun full of automotive grease. What lubricant do you all recommend when I put Ol' Betsy back together?

I put white Lithium grease on all non-reciprocating parts such as top cover latch, back gripframe rail slots, trigger pivot assembly area, main recoil spring and rod, firing pin and spring, etc.

Then SAE 10-30 everywhere else, bolt, barrel supports (booster and trunnion), top cover moving parts, etc and lots of it. Get a 2 to 4 oz. squeeze bottle with a 4 or 6 inch pinpoint extension for adding more between belts as you shoot.

Simply Green to clean and Break Free to lube for me. :)
be careful with that drive spring/rod when disassembling! it will put a hole in whatever it hits if not removed or installed correctly!

Wheel bearing grease or Crisco if you want that fried chicken smell :). Never lube any part that comes in contact with ammo.

Grease works great if you are in a warm and relatively clean environment. A nasty cold day will make the gun run badly or not at all depending on the temperature. In a hot dry area lots of grit/sand blowing around will mix with the grease and create a polishing compound - if you're lucky.

Living out here in the desert, I use the same system as Shattered with a very light coat of white lithium grease on all moving parts and a good drizzle of Mobil 1. For me the operative term is "machine" gun. Lube it like a machine and it'll work fine. Plus it's a riot to watch the other folks on the firing line when you set up the 'pod, hang the gun on it, then break out a quart of motor oil. Priceless.

Lobo keeps recommending Crisco to make it finger-lickin-good. Gotta' try that some day.

Well,

we could have fried a chicken on some of the barrels at the FL shoot!!!

I use either wheel bearing grease (From a 5lb military tub), or lubriplate (white lithium base). Yep, don't grease anything that contacts the ammo.

LSA should work fine, I do use it to wipe it down and put it in the safe, so I know some remains when I shoot.

Speaking of which, I need some more LSA

well.. I'm out here in liberal land (lala land hehe) SF Bay Area CA so no real dusty conditions.. but I'll go with the white lithium grease (I've got a bunch of it since I use it for my AR and Garand rebarreling) and I'll rob my auto parts cabinet and get out a the 10-30 :D This wait for my own 1919A4 is killing me!!!! It's only been 2 weeks since I got in on the Allied Armament group buy....:D

Thanks everyone for your responses, suggestions. That reminds me, I have a gallon of CLP in the shed. I haven't used it since my father-in-law asked me to dip a rusty old colt in some. The kids are having a good time helping dad clean ol' betsy. They like the smell of gun oil.

If the kids like the smell of gun oil they are going to LOVE pulling the trigger on the 1919. I have a son (35) and a grandson (6) and I can't pry either one of them off mine when the belt's loaded and it's ready to go. :D

If the kids like the smell of gun oil .....
Reminds me of a conversation my wife had with some of her co-workers a few years back. Some of the women in her lab were chattering about make-up and perfumes and such (my wife isn't into that stuff) and one of the women asked my wife what her favorite pefume was. She answered "Hoppe's #9". Drew a blank look from the other women, but the guys in the lab smiled.
