Sometime between now and Friday ,the USS Lake Erie will launch a missile to knock out a renegade spy Satellite.
No big deal you say ? its been done before.
Not so ,it has been done on old satellites in a stationary orbit ,but never something moving 26X the speed of sound at that distance in a radical orbit ,the size of a mini van.
This is a big one for America ,They are selling T shirts saying ( Go Lake Erie ,knock that thing right out of the park).
Our Enemy's are saying we will fail ,the Capitan and Crew of the Lake Erie say we can do it.
Where is the Media cheering these guys on ,where is our pride ?
USS Lake Erie ,make us proud.
In the 60s it would be on every news channel ,kids would buy models of the Erie with its missile ,The President would call the Crew ,A little Cruiser in the middle of the Ocean can do this :)

I'm going to try and watch it.
I think it is cool as hell.
After all the election crap ,murders,Lies ,it was neat to see a little ship who isn't getting any recognition for what it has received orders to do.
The Military world is watching this one for sure.
That ship needs the support of the Media for what it has to do ,and a couple of Congressmen agree.
Every one who ever hunted knows what this is ,you have one shot.
I know that Crew can do it ,and our ship did just that:)

Fox is talking about it ,and they are watching this real close.First shot ,everyone will know ,a Little Cruiser in the Pacific can dot your eye , Americans need to see this.
OH, Fox just said this isn't a guidance type deal ,they have nothing to lock onto.
Man this is the real thing.

I would say the fuel would depend on "who's" it "is" If its Russian than it will be nuke powered they liked sending theirs up with some sort of small reactor on board,
I remember there was a big deal about one that came down in Canada back in the 70's while the cold war was still running a temperature.
They were talking about the possible localized Radioactive contamination at the time.
I think nobody cares because missiles, rockets & Satilites are considered old hat, heck nobody pays any attention to the space shuttle unless it blows up!

from what I understand it is one of our old spy satellites, I was thinking nuclear also but it's probably a no-no for them say that and get people in a real uproar:rolleyes:
It's one of ours - but not such an old one. It's one that went wrong before it attained proper orbit. And the fuel is a highly toxic chemical, non-nuclear. They anticipate that a portion of the satellite will burn up, but that most would make it to earth. I think that the reason for this is that the satellite is not at the extreme altitude that it should have been at.

I think this is just a show to show the world that we can do it without a problem unlike China that did it saying it was experimental blablabla I just checked yahoo and they said they already launched the missle and hit it?? I would setup and fly the B2 bomber around the world to show everyone we got the big balls...

OH, Fox just said this isn't a guidance type deal ,they have nothing to lock onto.
That doesnt make any sense. If they have nothing to lock onto, then how the hell do they hit a moving target which is not visible to the naked eye when they fire the missle? It's not as if the captain is going to shoulder a missile launcher, put the satelite in his sights, calculate some lead distance and fire is he?

Seems to me, as ignorant about missiles etc. as I am, that in order to hit a moving target up in space/sky like that, the missle HAS TO be able to lock onto it's target and then follow it/intercept it. Can anyone shed light on this?

The fuel in question, as I understand it, was reported to be Anhydrous Hydrazine. It is one of the components of liquid rocket fuel, and it is a rather nasty and highly corrosive mess. Even in labratories, it needs all kinds of safety gear to mess with it. I doubt it would be sufficent to cause a large issue with contamination if it dispersed that high up before reentry, but IF it were to fall to earth intact, it probably would pose a hazardous waste issue in the area it landed in.

From what I hear, the shot was a success, so it's probably a moot point now. Hope the Peoples' Republic of Wal-Mart was watching, and got the frackin' hint!!! ;)
