Here they are again. They still are available through Iron Creations. $47.00 plus shipping from Jeff Prater. The handles have hollow tubing to keep the weight down. These look like" issued with gun" according to our satisfied customers. Every detail thought out to bring you a top quality product. :)

Straight Skinny

Had a long conversation with Jeff at Iron Creations today; his back is giving him trouble but he expects of overcome; however, since he was the maker of the fine extended wooden extended bolt charging handles, he stated that " they are all gone and there will be no more made by him. The actual maker of the wood part became greedy and it was just not worth the time to run ones and twos", said Jeff. :jedicrying:

Now then, this is an opportunity for someone/ anyone who can make a good product at a market price to produce them---.

Dang it...I thought it would look awesome with a wood grip back plate and carry handle.

It should be fine, You just need to remember the GI method of charging and train for it. Palm up, cupped hand, thumb along side of hand, NOT WRAPPED AROUND CHARGING HANDLE. That goes for any charging operation for fear of a cook off or AD. If you are above gun reaching down just reverse because of position, but never wrap your thumb in a full grip or clutch the charging handle in a way that if it dischages you break a thumb, sprain your wrist. The cupped hand method was developed and soldiers trained on for a reason. It may still hurt as the handle is ripped from your hand but far less that slamming into it. The palm up method also takes advantage of your stronger muscles, essentially a curl, palm down uses more ofyour weaker muscles along top of forearm. Only reason I mention palm down is sometimes standing over gun working on it but as you have found out these need a bit of muscle from time to time

I agree but I don't think too many people would be willing fabricate a retracting slide for these and be able to market it at a reasonable cost...
A retracting slide would not help much since the bolt still reciprocates. Eliminate any cocking handle and yes, then it would be a cat's A$$ setup.....but then there goes the nice wood handle. :)

The bolt will always have to reciprocate , how else would it chamber and extract . The slide , however , travels back only when you first charge it , then you push it back forward and it ( and the handle ) locks into place . The handle is attached to the slide , no longer directly to the bolt .

On another thought , rather than a retracting slide , how about something more along the lines of a BAR charging system ?

A completely different setup then - as cocking handle is not/would not be in the bolt at all like these are set up to go......correct??

Correct . A short stub rests in the bolt hole and the charging handle would snag it on the way back . BAR is basically the same thing , a pin going through the bolt rides inside the cocking handle assembly during firing and is snagged when cocked by hand .
