Someone else on a different board linked to the similar article, but it was the full nitty gitty article, all the details. It was like 10 pages long. Anyways, in there, it refered to the ammo as being "7.62" in nature. Well, obviously that's Ak-47 ammo they are talking about.

Anyways, here's the kicker, it said one of the contracts was for 10 million or so rounds, at $22 per thousands rounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

$22 per 1,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!

Sold by the foreign govt for $22 per 1000 for 7.62x39 according to the article I read. That was sold to a middle man who in turn marked it up ALOT and sold it to the US govt contractor. That contractor then marked it up and sold it to the US Govt and then the US gave it to the Afghans or Iraqi's. According to the article the middle man was there to pad the price so as to skim the kickback for the foreign govt officials that needed......greasing. I don't see what everyone is so up in arms about...pardon the pun, I mean that is the way lots of business is conducted in the real world. I guess cuz guns and ammo are involved it makes it worse somehow.

They did specifically mention 7.62x39 but I am sure there was lots of 7.62x54r in there to as both the Afghans and Iraqi's use PKM's and those are belt fed 54r guns.

re-read Dave B, it isn't the gov't that is paying 22 bucks per 1,000, after the middle men get done uping the price, I bet we (taxpayers) are paying more for 1,000 rounds, then you buy at the local gun show.

And the REAL point is not whether we as taxpayers are paying $22 per 1000 rounds, or $200 per 1000 rounds- it is that we are then GIVING IT AWAY to another country's government. What; THEY don't need to pay, but OUR taxes are what they are? And these are the same people who keep playing games with us and the taliban, and Bin Laden in Afghanistan? And Iraq- what; they can't repay us by dumping cheap crude oil to us, to drive down the price in the rest of the market so we can maybe try to rebuild our own economy along with theirs?

The US government got tricked into buying the same ammo under contract that they were paying the com bloc countries millions of dollars to destroy.
Someone should be going to jail over this but it looks like due to carelessness in writing the spec for the ammo, all recourse is lost and the taxpayers will end up paying more to destroy the ammo that they just bought. Some government worker is going to get a raise and promotion for this cluster. I'm sure no one will be fired.

I think on CNN there was a video about some Pakistani military unit that got cases of this stuff. It said that it was junk ammo, manufactured in 1966 in China, was corroded, did not fire consistently, and in general useless. Doesn't bode well for our allies that we expect to fight. But then again "Trust us, we are from the government and are here to help" I guess applies here as well.

They also mention in the NY Times article that they removed the ammo from the crates and spam cans and repacked it in paper bags and other substandard containers. Whenever I have opened a sealed can of Chinese ammo from the 60's, its always fresh. Same for the 7.62X54R spam cans from the 1950's. Fresh as a daisy.
