not 1919 related but I figure someone here would know..... im thinking about buying a Thompson a1 Commando model, My reasoning for this is I wanted an M1 as im trying to complete my WWII gun Collection, Garand, B.A.R. 1903 etc... but I also want a 1927A-1 deluxe with the Drum but the M1 doesnt take the drum, the Commando model does however take a drum and the stick, and judging from the pics it looks like a 1927a-1 with a black M1 style stock on it. So I guess my question is
A. if I get the commando and bought a 1927a-1 stock with the forward pistol grip can I change out the stocks at will and in a sense have both?
I hope to buy both but right now im in the mad scramble to get my hands on all that I can, financially it makes more sense for me to get the commando now, and if I cant get a 1927a-1 due to a future gun ban, then I can atleast swap out the stocks for a change of scenery so to speak..... guess im looking for opinions on whatcha all think :D

A long time ago i had a commando and i loved it ,it was one accurate little carbine and the best of all the pistol round carbines. I traded a 1927 for it and i liked the M1 better ,but i don't know about stock swapping .
I know you cant swap the hand guards because i asked Thompson that.
The M1 was reliable and a hoot to shoot ,but they are heavy , and i wish i still had it because what i traded it for was a total POS.

I would rather have the M1 than the 1927 .the 27 is fun and looks good ,but it is still a semi auto ,and one heavy SOB.
The stick mags worked OK for me ,i never used a drum but i wanted the Marine look and not the Capone look:)

Yah, thats what im thinking, I want the one that fills my WWII collection, but If I can just swap out some stocks in 10 mins or less and have a capone style as well that would be ideal...

Don't know about the current Kahr versions, but with the West Hurley I built, the front grips CAN be made interchangable with two original Thompson parts, BUT you have to mill down the sides of the front hanger (I don't recal the exact measurement offhand, but just measure the inside of the original Thompson front grips and there you are).

tommy guns

I bought one of the 1927's made by Kahr, other then the finish and the rear sight falling off I've really enjoyed it, the horizontal grip from a M-1 won't fit very well, the mounting bracket on the Kahr is wider the the original, plus with the longer barrel they look funny, I milled a new one out of some walnut and made it 4 inches longer, you can tell some thing isn't quite right but it still looks good, plus the horizontal grip is a lot easier to shoot accurately with.

GS-Patton,
Do like I did buy your self one of those $700 semi-auto M1 thompsons that have a 16" barrel and then buy one of Auto Ordinence's 10.5" barrles they are perfectly legal and the thompson will be as close to an orignal full auto from ww2 as you can get without spending $20,000.

Thats legal??? Isnt that considered a short barrel rifle??

If you put the short barrel on a gun that originally had a 16 inch barrle you have to register it as a SBR and pay the tax,fee or what ever they call it. To me not worth the hassle. Now if I could afford the full auto M-1 with the short barrel that would be worth the hassle!
