On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th Month,... World War 1 came to a end.

My Grandfather was in the Infantry then, he had also lost a brother to mustard gas.

God bless them all who served.

the war to end all wars

both my grand fathers were in ww1 . one in the us navy, mostly in the pacific, the other was in europe going to school (sorbon)when the war started in 1914. he was in germany visiting cousins at the time , and had to cross the front to come home to SF. 1yr later he was back in paris, this time in a us army uniform, a mastersgt in MI , living in the same appt he had as a student. some place I have his battle ribbons. he was at every battle the us was in, interogating german soldiers, making "nice" w the french and translating found documents on the battle field. to the day he died, he couldn't stand to hear taps being played, he heard it so often during the war. he lived to be 95 . as he got older he started to tell me about his experiances, memorys that I pass on to my son as well as I can, For me the first world war only ended 20 yrs ago. I still think of it as Armistice Day

My Grandfather, who I never met, served in the Baloon Corps. Sadly, he was a great man for cleaning and his army pictures are all I have. By the way, if anyone ever sees an Army oval frame (Big one)with plaster mouldings on it that says "Spirit of 76 and 18" on it I would really like a picture of it. Some of the plaster has fallen off and I want repair it and not sure what is gone. Thanks to all who served. Hotch

My Avatar is my Grandfather on my mothers side he fought in WWI for the Kaiser in an Artillery unit, my dad's father was officer in the U.S.N during WW I, my dad's stepfather was in the Canadian Northumberland Div. During WWI, He and my mom's father were about 1/2 a mile from each other in the front line trenches......Small world...... I also had an uncle on my mothers side who had been part of Franz Josef's palace guard, He went A.W.O.L. right after the assassination Franz Ferdinand and made it to America, I was told he came with a price on his head, I do not know weather it was because he went A.W.O.L. or because he may have had some involvement with the Black hand, according to my mom we had some Serb blood in the family. So it's possible a distant relative may have had a hand in tearing the world apart in 1914.

My Prized Possesion Grandfather's WWI Diary

I can say nothing to add to the respect we owe those who serve, so this is the entry from my grandfather's dairy for November 11, 1918. (A few words are difficult to read, excellent penmanship just a different style and scrip.)

Nov. 11.1918
Fired all morning and all boys hug(?) giving(?) ground for the end is in sight
In the evening No Mans Land was lit up like old Broadway (street in St. Louis, his home town) The evening of Nov 11th the battle of Champay ne took place
Beginning the armastice was the 11month11 day and 11hour. Last shot I heard fired was 11.11 a.m.

Yes, I have questions about "the battle of Champay ne" was this possibly the eve of the 11th? The diary starts Sept. 15th, 1917, he was in Battery A, 128th Field Artillery and ends May 3,1919 with "Arrived back to stay in good old St. Louis." Also includes unit member names, names of men KIA, wounded, and gassed.
He has been gone for 38 years and I still miss him.

I've no one in my family that fought in any US war or significant conflict.

Despite that, may God Bless those American patriots who gave their very all to fight on our behalf, for the freedoms that we cherish today.

God Bless them all, and may God Bless those bearing any uniform of the United States of America. With all of it's faults, this is STILL the greatest country with the greatest military in the world.

My Great Grandfather was an electrician on a shop during the war. Had a Great Uncle that got hit with mustard gas serving in Italy. Finally died from complications from the gas in 1925. Before he died he got a medal from the Italian govt. for his service signed by no other than Benito Mussolini himself.
