Help is requested?
In TM9-1205, 7 August 1944, they list in the updates modifications (page 15, 3a)
"The casing assembly has been modified so that the barrel jacket is now soldered to the casing. NOTE: Since this modification, barrel jackets are not to be disassembled in field stripping."

I'm guessing that the casing assemble they talk of is the trunnion?

What I'm interested in learning is what did they modify on the trunnion design and can you tell a difference between a pre "1944" trunnion and a post "1944" trunnion?????

Thanks for any help!!:)

no design modification was done. the shrouds were just soldered to the trunion (casing). had a problem with troops in the field jacking up the trunion threads after cleaning in the field.

I agree with your observation. It appears to me that what happened was they assembled the jacket to the casing ( the assembled reciever box) heated up the area of the jacket around the screw threads on the trunion touched solder to the screw hole area, and just like sweating copper pipe, the solder was sucked into the threads, the screw was inserted and staked in place.

Drawing (D size) 6535358 Revision 17 dated 5-10-48 (the Finding Diagram) has a note requiring this method with the requirement that the solder be "high tempreture solder (1500F minimum" it also shows the locking screw installed. This well may have started earlier, as all of the drawings were re-drawn and re-numbered around the is time, and all previous revisions were included on the re-drawing, but not shownindividualy.

I don't think anyone solders the shroud back on. No need for us civilian types. I rarely have a reason to remove the bugger to begin with, once the beast is parked and assembled. It is much easier to built the guns with the shroud off the trunnion, not to mention parking it. When building a kit with a soldered shroud, just be sure you wire brush all the solder off the threads on both parts while hot, upon disassembly. Mapp gas works just fine to loosen things up.
