Cope,, I feel your pain, BUT,,,,, I used to ship 50 lb boxes back when I had a print shop,, I would put one tape over the middle of the box, then three across the middle seam then one over each of the end seams and one one each over the top and side of the side seam. This would be duplicated on the bottom of the box,,, twelve years and I never lost a box of shirts to the box opening. I do the same now when I ship stuff,, I shipped a chainsaw lumbermill, complete with powerhead and two bars, one being almost 50 inches long to Costa Rica via UPS and it arrived without a dent. Load stabilization is a must. If the contents does not shift and the box is well taped it won't come open.
I have recieved many packages that looked like they had been packed by a minimum wage flunky who didn't give a **** about his job or the customer's goods,,,,,, uh, nevermind. PS,, they got to me,,, have not a clue how,,,

I agree with RR. I've shipped countless akward items via UPS and Fed Ex. If wrapped properly with good tape and stabilized in the carton so no shifting or flopping around takes place, they never arrive damaged or opened. Now, that doesn't mean they always arrive  but the ones that do arrive in tact. At least so far......better knock on some mahogany here quick!

Oh, I'm not denying that this package was poorly packed. Whoever did it decided to just throw some ak barrels in the box loose with a little newspaper. I just don't see how some one at UPS couldn't have noticed the box going to pieces, and put some tape on it.

.30Cal, that is unbelievable. I bet there were some freaked out UPS workers when that one came through the hub.

I'm not defending them, but it isn't always them .
I ordered some tractor parts once ,and they just tossed them in a box about that size . Well that stuff is going to shift ,and it was all poking out the box and broken or missing.
When i ship a Gun and its accessories i pack the CRAP out of it.
News paper ,cardboard ,and each part is wrapped separately ,and the gun itself is wrapped several times.
Or a box inside a box ,or a cheap Wal Mart gun case in a box.
Then compress the crap out of in the shipping box ,and i have had emails thanking me.
I will tell you this guys , do not put anything relating to a firearm on the shipping label. If its going to ,,Joe's Gun Shop ,, put JGS then the address.
I don't even declare its a gun ,i say Machined & tooled mechanical assembly.
And you are not illeagle ,Clinton passed an Executive order saying no words havening to do with a firearm can appear anywhere on the shipment ,or paperwork. I don't know if that was to deter us from shipping guns or what ,
but i never have had any trouble after i did that.
And Cops or Feds do look around in those Docks and Trucks sometimes and if they see gun anywhere on that paper work they can and will rip it open ,dig through it ,then half ass it back together.
A UPS Manager in Houston told me that ,then they get the Blame.

I just shipped some lathe chucks, wrapped them in plastic bags, spayed some expanding foam in the box and let it set up a bit, put the chucks in and filled the rest of the box with foam. It will be a -itch to remove them but they are well padded and won't shift any. The heavier one went by USPS flat rate priority, 52 pounds for about $13 to Texas. The lighter one went to Florida by UPS for a little over $21, just a little to tall for the flat rate box:(.

The gun was shipped by it's owner in a proper box, packed well and taped properly. No telling what happened to the original box and what went through UPS's mind to send it on like that:confused:.

the last company i worked for i had to deal with one doozy of a claim. the fedex driver threw a mac g5 tower over a privacy fence into a 2' pond. then he faked the signature.

i have had all kinds of messed up shipping issues.

30 cal .the last gun is shipped i traded a guy for one of his.
We talked about this stuff, so i took a pic of my gun packed before closing the box and he did also ,along with what the box looked like when it left.
This is becoming a common practice on GB and GA now.
It is a good policy.

I did that when shipping a very rare set of custom harley heads and cylinders a while back. Works like a charm and not a single chipped fin in the package. One suggestion; I found that it helped a bunch to take a garbage bag and split it open, and after you put the saran-wrapped parts in the spray foam, put the open trash bag across the top of it across the box, and then fill the rest with foam and tape the box shut BEFORE the foam finishes expanding and hardening. Much easier to seperate when opening, and still gives a tight but protective seal. Not cheap, though, so if you do ship this way, be sure to add in for the costs involved. Probably not worth it on something typical, but on a really rare piece like a WWII scoped sniper rifle or some such, it can make the difference in getting there in one piece or not (and it also helps cut down on SOME of the nosy "what's-in-the-box?" types) .

On the rare occasions when I have a large item coming UPS, it seems I never receive the box without one or two holes punched in it, or at least beat to hell. Even when well packed, the boxes just get abused. A good friend of mine worked at a UPS facility for many years, and he told me the abuse given to packages there defies belief.

I use USPS Priority for most everything. If it is large enough where that is not practical, I use FedEx Ground, which for me has proved more reliable than UPS. With Priority Mail, they are not moving a zillion boxes, and it is in the system only 2-3 days generally, so there is far less opportunity to abuse the box. Only one time did I have a Priority box come damaged, contents missing. The shipper did not pack it as well as he could have, and my local post office had stamped it as "received in damaged condition". But here was the kicker. There was a sticker from a third party contractor that the Postal Service used, probably to fly it across country, and I am pretty certain it was in their hands that the damage was done. No, not UPS, but Fed Ex in this case.

F*** Ups!

UPS blows dogs for quarters. Ive had more problems with them than i want to remember. I swear the guys at ups are probably the washouts from fedex.

Everything from a box 0f 8mm being open and some belts missing - driver said it 'spilled' in the wharehouse but hsould all be there. yeah right, not by my count bud.

Barrel of a mosin nagant sticking out of the end of the box - driver just scraped and dropped it right on the step - barrel first - i couldnt believe my eyes and couldnt hold my tongue either.

A 1919 that was in a plastic gun case and then cardboard box came to me with the grip end sticking out thru the broken case and the box, scratched up a bit.

Overnight package that didnt show up for a week, but was still charged for overnite?

Dipshit behind the counter fumbled the computer and charged my account for the shipment, then sent a bill to the other guy for it too. On the phone they acted like i was an idiot and that biotch got a peice and a half of my mind.

a case of yugo 8mm that was shipped in the tin - the cardboard box around it magically disappeared in shipping, and they charged me 8 bucks because the package wasnt in cardboard, and they obviously dropped it and ruined several rounds of ammo.

etc etc etc

F*** UPS, pay a lil more and go fedex.

My best one was a box with 6 different parts sets being dumped on a door step 7 streets over with no signature. People opened the box (plainly labeled with my address) and called the cops took 3 hours to get it back from the Gestapo. They still think I'am going to start a revolution.

Some years back when I was dealing Class 3 hot and heavy part-time, my real work office was on the third floor of an office tower. Someone from another office in the building came to me with a box they had found laying on the floor in the first floor lobby near the elevators. The box was addressed to me. The box contained a brand new full-auto MAC10 9mm with silencer!! About an hour later the UPS guy showed up and asked me if I had seen the box. I said "What box?" The guy turned pale and said if I didn't have it he must have lost it somewhere cause he didn't have my signature on the delivery receipt. Then I asked him who the shipment was from. When he told me the name of the shipper I said "Great, that's the machine gun and silencer that I just bought and UPS has lost the box??" Thought the guy was going to pass out!!! Then I showed him the box. He was relieved but not too happy with me! I switched to FEDX the next day!

Does this happen to only gun people or what?

I bought some Items off the board here, a few weeks ago, UPS repackaged the boxes and made 3 exceptions naming it as not having the correct address (bs), I still say someone had their head up the supervisors ass and I have proof that the original address was correct which was under the corrected label that UPS placed on top of it trying to hide it.

Its one thing to say that they can't find the address its another to say "you don't want to drive out to deliver it would have been easier for me to believe that", i don't care if they don't want to deliver it on time or are waiting for another box to come in but damn it don't lie to my face and say the address was wrong when there are 4 ****ing labels available on the boxes, duh get a brain.

they did this again for Legal software, guess what! I peeled the label back and the address was the same. Go figure.

I know you have to package items really good sometimes overkill to keep UPS from breaking the box open, I even use Duct tape and USPS packing tape to keep those bozo's from saying it broke open, its very obvious when the duct tape is cut.
