Remember the youtube video of the guy getting tasered in Utah.
Well he was awarded $40,000 for it.
I guess it's not good juju for a highway Patrolman in Utah to tase somebody on camera before you tell them there under arrest.
To bad the taxpayers have to pay for the highway patrolman loosing control of the situation.

Dang.....I'm gonna go see if I can get a rookie to gimme a jolt on camera...I could use $40,000 clams......

I thought that trooper was a piss poor example of both self control and of professionalism from the get go. Guess the jury agreed. Glad no one was seriously injured in the incident, and I hope the trooper doesnt to the general public, now paint all Utah troopers with a wide swath brush in his image.

I think all you have to do is ask a few questions apparently they don't like that. Oh and I think you have to say you want to take a ride on the lightning I think some of the young one's like to use that lingo. They may not understand what your asking for.

glad

glad someone posted the outcome that was a long thread were people posted back and fourth pro and con about tasering people, I for one have read many stories about people that died getting tased but the police want to pretend it doesn't happen and they also always say it was do to other complications.

we'll yah when you taze a 20 year old cadet in good health of course he gets right up and is fine.

I am very tired of hearing we have tased thousands in tests , yah you tased 18-20 year olds in prime condition.

its alot different when you got a 50 year old drunk or even a 40 year old junky

thats the facts is tasering better than shootin people yes but don't try to hide the FACT that people have died getting tased

Did it go to trial or did the UHP settle out of court? I was wondering as well, thanks for the update, maybe the gung ho among the LEO will think a little before they nail the next person.
There are many fine LEO's who utilize the taser only as a last resource when all else has failed. That is what the taser was meant to be used for.
My next comment does NOT apply to those good officers.

There will continue to be many innadequate law enforcement officers. Those officers will insist on utilizing the taser as a crutch in an effort to make up for their inability to de-escalate situations. These officers won't learn their lesson until it backfires directly on them.

Thats weird because the Tooele county court actually cleared the officer of criminal conduct. Also an internal UHP investigation cleared him  . Its weird that Utah would settle with him after these rulings. Must have thought that rather than battle out the suit in court it would be easier to settle out. Something seems a bit strange about this though. I knew the Massey kid in school, he was a decent kid, personally I felt the officer failed to communicate with him properly. He could have avoided all the problems by just telling him what he was doing and why. In light of recent "caught on cam" police incidents, I bet these cameras are more likely to be left off in the future.

It's not really so weird. Theres a difference between criminal conduct and being found guilty in a civil court. Perhaps Utah used common sense and realized that officers just cannot go around tasering people under the circumstances surrounding this incident. Utah clearly sent a message to the police force with this settlement. Remember OJ, innocent in a criminal court, and hung out to dry in a civil court. Civil courts sometimes rectify the criminal courts screw up.

Someone who knows best can comment, but I don't think that vehicle dash cams are switchable by the officer. That would defeat their purpose and allow "cheating" as you are implying would occur with more frequency. Does anyone know for sure, do these dashcams automatically fire up when the vehicle is in use, or can the officer just arbitrarily flip it off?
