I'm just finishing up building myself another upper, and I got wondering; Has anyone ever built a water-cooled AR? Would it work? Would cooling the gas tube reduce airflow enough to cause reliability issues?

If someone has one, or knows of someone who does, I'd like to hear more. If someone knows that it won't work, and why, that'd be good to hear, too, before I do something stupid myself.

it works but ive never understood why someone would want to fool with it? with the cheap cost of uppers, why bother? it will work though, there is a guy in our shooting group that sometimes comes out that built a water cooled upper for his m16. next time i see him ill try and get photos, or video of it

Thanks, BAR, that'd be much appreciated. I'm not really doing it because I need to, more just to see if it can be done. Someone got a nasty burn when they put their hand down on an AR after it had gone through about 200 rounds of rapid fire, which eventually spawned the idea.

i know that it is close to blasphemy but i really don't care for the crap that goes along with having a wc gun. too much cleaning, seals, weight, stuff.

thats why i have not built or purchased any of them. a wc upper for my 16 would be pretty funny though. keep this thread updated if you do it

Have melted LOTS of gas tubes on AR15 and M16's, they only take 174 rnds then they are melted. Thats runnin a full beta mag threw it non stop, puttin new one in as fast as you can and shootin it till it stops on its own at 74 rnd mark. Try it and tell me im wrong.

I'd believe you there. The second time I tried the new PMAGs, I had about nine of them with me, I emptied the first two at a reasonable rate, but then bumpfired the other six as quick as I could. I didn't melt the gas tube, but it was heavily discolored when I was cleaning later.

The PMAGs are great, though. This was after I had loaded them all and let them sit for a month. The first test I bought one, loaded it, and threw it at solid objects until I was satisfied.
