If it's a naval gun it's an MG-40. Slower rate of fire... not much but slower. Only difference is the booster. AN-M2 is the faster Army Air Corps cousin.

Ok I found another link, the forth down picture on the right makes a statement that "The flexible ANM2 aircraft. Nearly identical to the Colt MG40".

i thought that the navy took the anm2 as a replacement or upgrade for the mg40

rory

Well, basically, they did. The booster sped up the rate of fire. They Navy used it primarily in the tail seat of dive bombers and some torpedo planes. It was generally thought the higher rate of fire might make up for the lack of the bigger punch of the 50. Weight was a factor in these planes... the 50's weighed too much. The 30's were less than half the weight of the 50's.

Whatever the differences, I believe the MG40 was Colts' commercial name for the gun. I don't know if the Navy bought some commercially before it was adopted and issued the M2 designation. The AN prefix does refer to the fact that it was in use by both Army and Navy forces, of course.
