We live in a world where it's "someone else's job" to deal with things. It's rare enough that people take responsibility for their own actions - even rarer when people step forward and help with things that weren't their responsibility. The reasons behind this are wide ranging - everything from being a self-absorbed, self-indulgent society to being paranoid about getting involved (thanks to the media) to being just plain lazy. And there are certainly those people out there who are simply too dull-witted to even notice a two-year-old in the middle of the road or to realize that there might be a problem with that.

Aside from that putting yourself in that situation is of high risk.

I found a Land Rover in a parking lot that swerved to avoid a car, and got stuck in the median. I opted to save the day with my winch. I pulled up about 25' behind the thing, got out, put on my flashers and offered help.

Cars kept zipping between us.

I pulled my winch out and attached it. Several cars almost hit the cable. So I removed it.

Cars kept zipping between us.

I removed boxes from the back of my truck and setup a small set of barricades on both sides to prevent cars kept zipping between us. As I started to pull out the winch again, several cars slowed way down, and navagated inches from the boxes, and FROM ME to get between us.

Cars kept zipping between us.

I then asked onlookers to help out and stand on either side by the boxes to direct traffic. While this helped...

Cars kept zipping between us.

I advised the lady that this just wasn't safe. Someone was going to hit the cable and really ruin our days.

One word : Lawyers !! Like the guy who saw a man beating the crap out of a woman in a shoe store ,in front of everyone calling her every name in the book . he went over to try and stop him and help the lady who was bleeding by then . The good Sam .ended up having to punch the lunatic knocking him out . Turns out it was the womans boy friend , and she loves him sooo much ,the cops arrested the good sam ,and the lovely couple sued him and almost won.
Even the Media was bad mouthing the Good Sam. and said nothing about what started it.
The Media was quick to point out that a Police search of the insane good sams truck ,turned up a rifle behind the seat ,and no mention that he was a retired Army officer living on his disability pension from being wounded in desert Storm. The woman said that her boyfriend was helping her up after she fell ,and when the cops showed up all the witnesses ran away ,they didn't want to get involved.
Later at least one little paper reported that the girls boyfriend weeks later stabbed her nearly killing her ,ran away and now was a wanted fugitive.
And that the couple had a long history of domestic violence that the police on the scene that day never looked into.
This happened in Santa Fe ,just 1 year ago.

Good topic and proof you can't get average public to work together, outside of a miracle, I see it every day. For every person with the guts and brains to "take charge" in a bad situation, there's 3 dozen idiots willing to railroad that person into submission, been that way for a long time.

Again, I hate to repeat myself, please rent "Idiocracy" movie and tell me I'm wrong, this hilarious (non-PC) movie is so life-like, it's downright scary and might be our future, from education/world problems/hospital bills, I can see all the warning signs right NOW!

+1 on lawyers and I'll raise you cops.

A couple of weeks ago I had a small truck crash 15 feet in front of me. It was traveling on the wrong side of the road and hit the storm drain and landed just to the right and forward of my hood. This was in front of the police station, so the reaction time was perfect. There was a guy trying to reach in and turn of the motor and a cop started yelling at him to get away. Then the cop would not reach in and shut off the truck because of the broken glass (lieutenant Laura Molinaro). I could almost forgive her just because of how she looks in Levi's.

Sorry, back on topic. To top it all off the witnesses where treated like suspects and criminals. I can understand that the police need to keep control of a situation but every situation is not a triple homicide.

A grandfather here had just bought a new Harley Davidson.
It was a nice bike ,decked out ,he drove it back from El Paso .
The next day he was riding it on the by pass and an illegal alien in a one ton Pick up was drunk and ran a red light and ran the old man over killing him.
The Bike ruptured the fuel tank on the truck an caught the bike and the old man on fire.
The cops showed up ,cordoned off everything and motorist were driving by watching the old man burn.
Not a big fire ,but mostly consuming the old man below the waist.
30 minutes later still no fire truck ,so some people were yelling at the cops to have a little respect and put the guy out !
An oil field crew stopped and ran over with a fire extinguisher ,and the cops threw one of them to the ground ,and muscled the other up against one of the patrol cars.
The illegal fled the scene ,and finally after charing the old man to a crisp the fire went out on its own.
When i drove by the fire wasn't that big ,any fire extinguisher would have done the trick.
I cant under stand how the cops just stood there ,if the guy was alive still he wasn't after that.
This is a case where people couldn't stand it anymore ,and tried to help ,i never have forgotten this one ,put the old man out for Gods sake.
Even the Media wasn't to impressed with this one ,i don't know what procedure the cops have on this ,but where were the firemen ?
How do you think the family and grand kids of this guy felt ? put the guy out!!

A freind of mine got in a motorcylce wreck due to a lady pulling out in front of him, I just happend to pull up on the wreck after the cops were already there, I realized it was my freind so I stopped, I walked over and his bike was laying on its side, oil running out and still running... I walked over, reached down to turn the key off and the cops started yelling at me to stop... I turned it off anyway and got an ass chewing for it and got into it verbally with the cops... that kinda stuff I just dont understand...there is no need for that kind of stupidity......... it was too late anyway thought, the engine was ruined

We were just talking about this.

We have no moral compass anymore ? tell that to the blood sucking Lawyer that would sue your ass because you helped him.
Or the Cop who saw you leaning over him as he arrived on the scene ,not knowing what was going on.
Or how do these people not know this may have been a gang hit ,and may come back to make sure and take you also.
The papers are full of people who try to help other people getting screwed or arrested.
Hell if you did stop how do you know that the people watching wouldnt run out and rob you ?

If you try to help, you too can get hit and nearly killed. :(

Then there's always the threat of getting sued after the fact, or having police arrive and beat the crap out of you! It's not a matter or morals, it's a matter of safety and self preservation.

That is sad though ,i think by the way the people were moving close to him then walking away they wanted to help .
The guy on the bike sounded like he did , but like you said Aaron , all that Cop would have seen was an old man laying on the ground covered with blood ,and you with your hands on him.
You know what would have happened !
All the people around looking would run away ,and you would be laying on the ground also ,wake up in jail ,charges against you , some Detective saying ,oh yea sure ,why did you hurt the old man .
People have heard and seen this happen far to many times ,and they just don't want to get involved.
You would get out of it eventually ,but how long would you be put through the ringer before you did.
Like the lady with the little jar of cat pee ,arrested for Meth ,told the cops she was a breeder and it was cat pee .
10 days in jail ,two appearances before a judge ,and guess what ? it was cat pee.

In all honesty though ,in the cat pee thing it wasn't the fault of the Police.
It was the fault of the DA getting all excited making a name for himself ,and the Lab. The DA never should have brought that to Court with out the Lab results ,and the Lab should have gotten right on it.
I thought that LEOs had a Field test for stuff like this?
Break down in the system .
Should have called D8 ,he could have told them it was cat pee :)

Do i turn it in ,or call Detective Wayne in the Cat Pee narcotics Division ?
You better hold it for Wayne ,you know people are getting high on that crap.
Well tell him to bring his cat piss-O-meter.

My girlfriend tells me to stop helping people... That I'm going to get hit by a car, or get sued. There are so many insane lawsuits today, everyone is afraid to help - fear of getting sued!

WWJD?

i heard a Congressman on the radio this week ,i cant remember his name but he was a Rep. I wish he were the nominee .But i think the host was Ingram and she said a lot of Americans are afraid of the Presidential nominees this year ,on a lot of issues ,but mostly about the possibility of legislation banning ,or eliminating the private ownership of guns ,how do you feel about that.
He said his and about everyone Else's offices are being swamped with calls and emails from people on both sides of the aisle on this ,80% against it.
Believe me Congress knows how the American people feel on this ,Whether they say they do or not it is a topic that comes up constantly.
Anything passing in both houses still has to have a majority ,and with the ones i see that would be for anything right now it isn't going to happen.
The ones against anything along both party lines far out number the ones for it,including an ARB.
The other is legal reform ,America is the only country in the free world that doesn't have this ,The courts are asking for it ,and 65% of all lawyers want it also , The days of the frivolous law suite are about over ,people are afraid to say Hello to a passer by ,or let their children play outside with other kids.
Unfortunately some Lawyers in this country prey on these type law suits and it really needs to stop.
