I'm going to buy a .308 Izzy kit for the build party and am going to take Mouse's advise an convert it into 7.62 x 54R because its the ammo I like (mainly cuz its cheap) But I'm torn because I don't have a ton of cash at this venture, and I'm thinking I should just get the kit together in .308 buy a tripod, T&E, RSP, pay for machining and wait to convert it at a later time....

thoughts, suggestions, thanks.

the problem is 54r ammo has gone up a bunch in the last year, don't know how much is out there but it is surplus and not being imported any more so it will only go up just like 8mm. don't they make a 7.62x39 kit , that has stayed fairly constant on price , and is still being imported for now. build the kit in 308, won't cost any more for now and you will have the gun for later

Don't buy the tripod and T&E now, make due with something else like an MG-42 AA tripod, (100.00 +/-) and put the savings into ammo, or the conversion. I'd say ammo first, then worry about the tripod etc later.

I haven't read any reviews on how well these conversion kits are, from anybody that bought them..........so before I go plunking down some major bucks for a conversion kit, I would at least find out if they are any good.

Read Dolfs latest book, if he says they work what more do you need?
If you have trouble Troy offers either help or your money back, how do you lose on that?

I shot my first 1919 off a sandbag on a bench with a two handed pistol hold. Only got the tripod to display the gun at some gun shows.

yes, do buy LOTS of ammo and parts kits, i had a couple thousand rounds of Lake City 308 before I had my kit finished. I shoot mine off my back porch railing with a piece of carpet on the railing to keep it from scratching the gun and the railing.
