WWI 1917 water cooled the slot is for the trigger stop (safety) which is almost always missing an pure unobtainium these days.

Yes it will work on a 1919 and would be correct for an early conversion gun but as you can see in the picture Btwiest put up these were on the WWI 1917's and that safety was deleted around 920 IIRC so they are quite rare but there are plenty of those back plates running around. It would have had the high wood grips on it for what its worth and I happen to know a guy that has some should you need a set.
