I've been trying to get help for a Sandhill crane that is REALLY messed up. I work at an airport and I think it survived an encounter with a plane or maybe skydiver. Anyway I saw it late saturday afternoon. When I got home I found a bird rescue nomber, called them they gave me another number for a rescue closer to the airport. Called them sunday AM, she was nice but didn't seem to want to spring into action. Today I looked for the bird couldn't find it, figured it was a meal for something else. On the way out tonight there she was, I hauled ass back to the shop and called the rescue number. It was 5:30 so you can see were this is going, no one answered ! animal control no answer ! Decided I'd catch it, box it up and call again in the AM. No way, I got close enough to smell her and see the injuries, YUCK. I don't think she'll make it even if she's rescued tomorrow.

How rude it is for this bird to get hurt and show itself after hours !!
Also if you are going to call yourself a RESCUE you should answer your phone more often. If it wasn't a protected bird I'd shoot it and end her suffering. KevinT:mad:

If they refuse to rescue it.. I'll give you a recipe,. then call the rescuers,.. and ask them if the recipe is good for bird "X"...

And see how long it takes them to show up

well rescues generally operate under very limited funding. keeping someone by the phone at all hours just is not possible. and most of the ones that i know of are darn near at capacity or well over capacity all the time.

spay and neuter your pets!!!

but as for the bird rescue, i've never dealt with one so i have no answer. myself protected or not, i would help it ends its life. after i called animal control to let them know the score. and get their blessing.

Kevin,

Been down that road before, watching animals suffer and rot away, the rescue workers are very slow to respond on protected animals, often times too late. County LEOs show up and state the "gun-owner's 3-S policy" and sometimes do it themselves, our game wardens too, very understanding people.

I talked to the rescue lady and when I told her the gory details I suggested killing it myself. She agreed that it probably wouldn't survive rescue and would be put down anyway. So my next question is do I use a 22 or my 12 gage. I don't want to make lots of noise, one big boom is better than maybe several little ones. Any thoughts ? KevinT:eek:

12 Ga

Use the 12 gauge, there's no such thing as "too much gun"

I have a 410, no shells also have a twenty gage, all I have for that is rabbit and squirrel loads. I have 12 gage 8 shot, 00 buck or 1 oz slugs. Think I'll use the 8 shot. KevinT

00 buck

Use the 00 buckshot,. There's no such thing as too big of shot when you are trying to kill something, not eat it.
