How should belts/links be loaded?

Just curious to know how the belts should be loaded in order for the rims to not interfere? Can you show a picture of a loaded belt section?

Thanks for a great conversion! Very excited to see this.

Joe

Are you making any of these conversions for a 1917A1?

That would be the trick setup for when 30-06 prices start skyward.

I know for a fact that Troy has modified at least one 1917A1 top cover for the 54R. I'm sure that if the customer supplied the cover and, perhaps a barrel, he can do it. Also, if you convert an A4 barrel, ohioblacksheep can turn it to 1917A1 spec.

Why not?

I do not understand your question. What is so special about converting the caliber of an NFA weapon?

NFA caliber change

I have had quite a few NFA weapons in the past. Every gun had the caliber or calibers stated. Like a HK sear would be typically registered as 9mm, .223, and .308. I am not quite sure the exact process of changing the caliber and if they will let you, but I do see HK sears with N/A on the caliber part, which is saying that they can use any caliber. I have also seen them registered in .45, etc which I do not believe were viable calibers when the sears were registered initially. I have even heard that some just add callibers to the paperwork when the gun is transfered. The best bet is to just call the ATF and ask them. Most of my dealings with them have been good.
The number that I have for the NFA branch of the BATF is: 202-927-8330.
I havnt called them in a few years but I bet its still a valid number.
Cheers

As long as the conversion isn't a permanent change to the gun it's Ok.

Look at it like this, when was the last time anybody asked if it was Ok to install a .22 long rifle conversion in an M-16? Temporary change isn't a problem.

If you keep the conversion as a temporary change, meaning take the bolt and barrel out to store it you have no "infraction". but you can easily amend your form 4 to add the caliber. The Browning is unique in the fact that you can change barrels easily but with an MP5 or like arm it is a major operation to change calibers and would justly require the form 4 be changed. The UZI is another one that can easily be converted to other calibers by just changing the barrel, take the 41 AE conversion. IMI introduced it and I highly doubt if there are many if any that are registered in that caliber and all it was is a barrel and mag change.

If you're going to call, I would ask the question of amending the form 4 to add a caliber rather than going into a lengthy explaination of CAN I DO THIS?

Just my 2 cents, but I have been converting UZI's and other quick change conversions for a while now and all the big boys don't see any issues.

How difficult is it to put this together with an unbuilt kit, compared to a 'stock' parts kit? I'd really like to build one into 7.62x54r, and would really like to be able to do it without having to build a 'standard' one first.

Is this possible or will it end in tragedy?

No different than any other caliber, all parts interchange. You technically are building a "standard" one and you need to have the bolt converted to semi.

Ending in tragedy depends on your build skills

A couple of questions (now that i have a kit and see how all this stuff fits together).

Would it be possible to build a 1919 with the top cover you modify, and have it still work with .308, and then change bolt, barrel, etc. with the rest of the 54r parts, effectively having the one gun shoot both calibres? Or is that too involved to make it really feasible? I hope this makes sense, but if not... Hey! Free bump!

Barrelxchange is building me a kit as we speak and what I understood is once they modify the top cover that cover should work with all calibers. just swap out bolt, barrel, booster, and front cartridge stop for other calibers. If Im wrong Im sure someone will chime in.
