Good morning,

I'm looking to source an 8mm barrel for the MG42. Does anyone have any for sale or have a lead on one I can find? Gunbroker prices are making me lose all hope unfortunately. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Davis

If condition doesn't matter then, of course, they are cheaper, so make sure when you find a $200 barrel to buy, have the seller confirm with a pic that it has some rifling left in it.
A wartime marked MG42 barrel does not always guarantee a wartime extension. Be aware that there are a lot of wartime marked MG42 barrels out there, now, with replacement post war Yugo, Steyr and Rheinmetall extensions on them. Also, wartime extensions with new, recently made barrels attached. FWIW

I'm beginning to think about buying a new production barrel and surplus extension. Connect the two and use it until I can find a good surplus original barrel. I've found various bolts/bolt heads to adjust headspace as necessary, but I'm still obtaining parts to begin with.

If a wartime barrel doesn't have a wartime extension - does that mean it was refurbished post war? Or perhaps it was a NOS barrel that sat on a shelf during the war and was built up after the war ended?

I may have the rear sight bracket/ assembly.

For the barrel, get a m53 for about $400. A decent ww2 is going to cost. Even if the extension was changed it was done by a factory; it’s the aftermarket barrels you need to worry about.
If you've got the full rear bracket and sight assembly that would be extremely helpful and I'm would ask for a price if you locate the full assembly.

I've seen a few barrels popping up on Gunbroker over the last couple weeks and that could be one of the last pieces of the puzzle so to speak that I aquire. Assemble parts and pieces accordingly then fit them respectively.
