I remember buying my first firearm at a small gun shop in Brookline NH.
First time I had to fully fill out a form.
2nd time the dealer checked off a box that said "is known to me" after my name.
As much as a hung around that gun shop while growing up Mr Corey certainly wasn't lying!
Nowadays I go thru a CBI and NICS check plus fill out a rather long 4473 and then wait 3 days to exercise my rights as a US citizen.
The world felt better when I was 18 than it does now.
My town had one full time Police Officer (Harlan Muzzey), Mr. Paul was the Vice Principal and Spike Marvel was the HS janitor and ran the school bus service.
Before you did anything really out of line, you considered the consequences of your actions that you would face from one of these three men.
It was a small town in southern New Hampshire, mostly dairy farms, you were NOT getting away with anything.
They all were well respected, there is a College fund in Harlan Muzzey's name now (he passed on years ago).

Todays ways of checking databases is not a good way to get a measure of a man.

Amen, Sir. I grew up in the L.A. suburbs, but in those days the dynamic was not much different than what you experienced.

there was a specific time /date when the "drug" thing or
Are you "addicted " to whatever substance was added.

I forget when but do recall the change in the 4473.

So which form did dumfuk Jr. fill out?

One that asked or one that didn't.......Curious if His high End lawyers even knew this was a thing....I clearly recall the difference in the forms.

Was that before or after they added "non-binary?"

Wait a cotton picking minute, am I on the wrong forum… a bunch of guys feeling sorry for Hunter…..
I think if you can prosecute an ex-president for crimes, its nice that you can prosecute the son of a sitting president for crimes and get a conviction. America is truly great!

I would have a hard time caring less about any of the people being prosecuted for crimes that they committed.

I am worried about the mix of state and federal rule in regard to drugs but mostly how they interact with firearms rules.

and the legalizing MJ in so many places is what really drives this conversation.

Laws start with a good idea, are rushed through without vetting, and are generally written in a manner to benefit some politician. And then the politicians try to fix more problems with more laws on top of the old laws that didn't work. And then there's "not laws" like the secret no-fly list. So we have a mess on our hands, often with dubious resolution of the problems.

Crimes who committed? Should they really be crimes? Crimes are violations of laws, and with the legal system being a train wreck, you're going to get crimes, surprising things that are crimes, and stupid crimes that shouldn't be illegal to begin with.

The mix of pot use and federal laws is pretty simple: get convicted no more guns via 4473. Using medical pot cards to deny 4473 well that's a good one; I have a SCUBA cert that I've not used in 20 years. I bet federally it's illegal to buy pot, so if one buys pot at an outlet (say via CC) and the Feds find out, then yeah, no pass 4473.

In the SHORT TERM the Feds won't chase the little fish, only the ones they want. But like most laws, in the LONG TERM god knows how this is going to be abused. Government is an industry, conflicting laws are more industry...so it's not going to disappear.

Your point is well taken, although I'm pretty sure in this case loser JR was using Cocaine (and/or other heavier drugs) which are still illegal both State and Federally.

cocaine and pot are considered the same class federally. so for federal reasons they are the same.
again, this thread was to spark conversation about current state. and i know some of you partake in the reefer.

I'm mostly just curious on my comment.

I don't care for the wording on the 4473........it is what it is but used to be different.

best guess it was in 2015 +- when the form changed.

... never heard of a smoke shop brawl or someone getting high and smacking his wife around. cant say the same about whiskey...
There's a growing body of evidence that the modern, high THC concentration marijuana widely available now can induce mania. So far it's primarily manifest in child and spousal abuse.

I have mixed emotions on this. Permanently banning a reformed felon from possessing firearms seem a bit much. I know some who I would easily trust with firearms and would be happy to have protecting the community.

Hunter's prosecution was brought as a concession trial. They didn't prosecute him on his many significant crimes, so these charges were brought for political postering - no one is above the law. He's not the first person brought up on these charges. These are a convenient standby if all the elements of other offenses will be too difficult to prove.

"Hunter's prosecution was brought as a concession trial. They didn't prosecute him on his many significant crimes " That's a BINGO.
All a bunch of kabuki theater. He'll never stand trial for his real crimes.
Its all so tiresome. Just a shiny thing for the masses.....

There is a proven body of evidence that the voting Democrat induces mania but we don't have a question on there for that. So I guess I am on Rory side on this one. :)

I ran out of sympathy or empathy for any progressive (progressing towards Totalitarianism) democrats 7 years ago. You think the Bidens, his financiers among the Duponts and others couldn't arrange for a hung jury or mistrial? Hunter is a trash human, he deserves every punishment he gets and worse, for the decades of treason to the American People and jobs and industry lost to China since Beijing Biden got put into office by the Duponts and the credit card companies. He will be quietly pardoned after the election.

No law in the history of mankind, has EVER prevented a crime. All laws do is prescribe a Punishment for when said law is violated, the perpetrator is arrested by law enforcement then found guilty in the legal system.
Nearly every time a law is passed it places new restrictions on the freedoms of law-abiding citizens. The Criminals, by definition, don't follow laws.
The Constitution was written to place limits on the power of the federal government as well as to emphasize the God-given natural rights of citizens in the first 10 Amendments.

The difference here is that he was a known drug user that got caught because of who his father is. Had he been an average Joe it is likely that nothing would have happened to him. I honestly feel like 4473's are a joke to begin with but I'll play the game so I can own things I want.

Getting back to your point I don't do drugs and never have but, I also don't think that pot should be illegal. I think that should be treated like alchohol or tobacco. Crack on the other hand....
“Play the game”? Are you assigned to 1-50?

So to spin this around a bit - forgetting about the personalities and politics - what if the laws controlling these substances or devices were not there. Either repealed or had never existed. Rewind the clock a few hundred years. I wonder if we would love the things we do as much if they were not controlled. Would there be as many dealers and manufacturers - on either side of the line - if the line wasn’t there?

Wasn’t it the Whiskey Rebellion that lead to our standing army that really gave teeth to our central government? Not sure what came first - people thinking other people needed to be taxed & controlled, or people thinking other people needed to be less taxing & controlling. Who made who?

And FWIW I don’t drink, smoke or use/abuse anything stronger than caffeine and artificial sweeteners!

Horribly, that’s the attitude of most. If it’s the others that get hit by some law or politics, it’s celebrated. Problem is, it’s only time until same said is used against your side. Seems nobody is ever smart enough to step back from the celebration and ask “how could this be used against me?”
