Canfield's book on the Garand mentions the pad and states "the T4 pad fastened to the stock by means of a leather thong. The pad could be further secured by two wood screws". My copy of ORD 7 SNL B-21 Rifle U.S. .30 M1 W/E M1 National Match, M1C (Sniper's) W/E and M1D, 26 April 1957 does not even mention the pad. Most pictures I have seen of the pad in place show the two grommets but without screws as does the cover of Canfield's book.. Any time I ever used the pad on an M1 or M14 I pulled the leather thong and used nylon lace material and tied the excess around the rear sling swivel and it never moved. The leather thong was just to stiff to work with.
