Does anyone know of or have the specs for size and type of screw and escutchion to attach the leather cheekrest to an M1 rifle stock? Any help appreciated in advance. Thanks, Jason

If you can come up with the drawing numbers we have a much better chance of getting this information. They would be in SNL B-021 I do not have this SNL

According to ORD 9 SNL B-21, dated 10 Jan 1945, "List of All Parts of Rifle, U.S., Cal..30, M1: and Rifle U.S., Cal..30, M1C and M1D (Sniper's)" the cheek pad part number is D7312621. The cheek pads that I have ever seen are leather and are attached to the stock by leather lacing. Sort of looks like lacing up a running shoe (laces at the bottom of the stock or the heel of the stock). I don't know about a screw. Unless we are talking about two different things, Jason. In looking further regarding the escutcheon, I only see that part mentioned as part of the M1905 byonet. A152644 is the threaded left escutcheon (qty 2) and A152645 is the right plain escutcheon (qty 2). Again, I'm wondering if we are talking about two different things here. When I look at the list of screws for the M1 (or M1C with cheek pad) here is what is listed: screws for butt plate (both small and long), telescope clamp screws, front sight screws, gas cylinder lock screws, locking clamp screw, bracket mount screw, rear sight elevation knob screw, stacking swivel screw, stock ferrule screw, telescope support screw for front and back, valve screw and last but not least, wood screw, rd-hd, brass, 1/2 in, No.7.

Not sure if this just muddied the waters or if it helped? I have I picture of the cheek pad assembly that shows the felt inserts and the lacing if you think that would help. Send me a pm if you want me to email it to you.

Regards,
Gatekeeper

Canfield's book on the Garand mentions the pad and states "the T4 pad fastened to the stock by means of a leather thong. The pad could be further secured by two wood screws". My copy of ORD 7 SNL B-21 Rifle U.S. .30 M1 W/E M1 National Match, M1C (Sniper's) W/E and M1D, 26 April 1957 does not even mention the pad. Most pictures I have seen of the pad in place show the two grommets but without screws as does the cover of Canfield's book.. Any time I ever used the pad on an M1 or M14 I pulled the leather thong and used nylon lace material and tied the excess around the rear sling swivel and it never moved. The leather thong was just to stiff to work with.

Around here we call those trim washers. Not being all that familiar with C & D models it is possible that the screws were some sort of field modification for a particular shooter to lock the cheek pad to the proper position for their physical needs.

Anyway we know who has the SNL's and all the good stuff.

Thanks Gatekeeper keeping the train on the rails.

and to Armorer for his vast collection of stuff someone threw a way years ago.

Mine came with the afore mentioned dome head BRASS wood screws and the leather thong ends tucked under the criss crossed laces. I can provide lacing pictures if you would like.

I do not need pictures as all mine have been tied on for years
